Racha Yai, a popular local dive destination conveniently close to Phuket, can be reached in approximately 1.5 hours by a large diving boat. The underwater visibility here consistently ranges between 15 to 20 meters. On the eastern side of Racha Yai, you’ll discover three charming small bays renowned for their crystal-clear waters. Throughout most of the year, this area enjoys protection from strong currents and large waves. The Bungalow Bay, in particular, offers picturesque diving opportunities. The coral reefs gently slope from depths of 1.5 meters to over 30 meters, teeming with a profusion of marine life, including the occasional sighting of Manta Rays in the distance. Racha Yai caters to both novice and experienced divers, boasting a wreck site in deeper waters, and even featuring artificial reefs constructed from concrete cubes adorned with corals.
Racha Noi, another diving gem, can be accessed from Chalong Pier in approximately 2.5 hours via a large boat. Located to the south of Phuket, beneath Koh Racha Yai, Racha Noi closely resembles its counterpart, not only on the surface but also beneath the waves. With its sandy expanses and sturdy coral formations, Racha Noi is a great fit for divers who have already explored Racha Yai. The South Plateau, or South Tip, is reserved for experienced divers due to its depths starting at 18 meters and descending beyond 40 meters. The average dive depth hovers around 24 meters, and the site may feature varying currents and occasional reduced visibility. It’s not uncommon to encounter Manta Rays, sharks, and even the elusive Whale sharks. Some liken the experience to that of the renowned Similan Islands.
